Gold Rush Beans seeds produce a classic yellow wax bush bean known for its exceptionally long harvest window and pods that stay tender and stringless even as they size up on the plant. The smooth, bright golden-yellow pods reach 5–6 inches in length and hold a clean, mild, buttery flavor that sets wax beans apart from their green counterparts. Plants are compact and upright, making them well suited to raised beds, small gardens, and container growing.
Gold Rush is a fast-maturing bush bean, ready to harvest in approximately 55–60 days from direct sowing. Beans are a warm-season crop — sow seeds directly into the garden only after the last frost date has passed and soil temperatures have reached at least 60°F (15°C). Cold, wet soil causes poor germination and increases the risk of seed rot, so patience pays off here.
Choose a location with full sun (6–8 hours minimum) and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Beans fix their own nitrogen, so avoid over-fertilizing with high-nitrogen amendments, which encourage leafy growth at the expense of pod production. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and space them 4–6 inches apart in rows set 18–24 inches apart. For a continuous harvest, succession sow every 2–3 weeks through midsummer. Water consistently at the base of plants — wet foliage can promote fungal disease. Difficulty level: beginner-friendly.
Begin harvesting when pods are 5–6 inches long and still firm, before seeds begin to bulge noticeably inside the pod. One of Gold Rush's most valued traits is its slow-to-toughen quality — pods remain tender and stringless for several days longer than many other varieties, giving you more flexibility in your harvest schedule. Regular picking encourages the plant to continue producing, so check plants every 2–3 days at peak season.
The golden pods are mild and buttery with a slightly crisp texture, making them excellent steamed, sautéed, roasted, or eaten fresh in salads. Their bright yellow color holds reasonably well with light cooking and adds visual contrast to mixed vegetable dishes. For storage, refrigerate unwashed beans in a breathable bag for up to one week, or blanch and freeze for longer-term preservation.
A reliable, low-maintenance producer, Gold Rush is a practical choice for anyone who wants a dependable wax bean that performs consistently from first sowing through to the final harvest of the season.
