Gold Marie Climbing Bean seeds produce a classic yellow Romano-type bean prized for its wide, flat pods and rich, buttery flavour. This heritage climbing variety yields impressive 6–8" golden-yellow pods that are fleshy, tender, and virtually stringless when harvested at the right moment. The bold colour makes it easy to spot pods among the foliage, and the flavour — sweet with a creamy, full-bodied depth — sets it apart from standard green bush beans. A reliable performer on the vine, Gold Marie is a firm favourite with both seasoned growers and first-time bean gardeners.
Days to maturity: approximately 60–70 days from direct sowing. Gold Marie is a warm-season annual that thrives in full sun — aim for at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Sow seeds directly into the ground after all risk of frost has passed and soil temperatures have reached at least 15°C (59°F); beans do not transplant well. Plant seeds 5 cm (2") deep, spacing them 10–15 cm (4–6") apart in rows set 45–60 cm (18–24") apart. As a climbing variety, Gold Marie will reach 150–200 cm (5–6½ ft) in height and requires sturdy support — a trellis, bamboo teepee, or wire frame works well. Provide well-drained, moderately fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Avoid overfeeding with nitrogen, which encourages lush foliage at the expense of pod production. Water consistently at the base, keeping foliage dry to reduce disease risk. Succession sow every 2–3 weeks through midsummer for a continuous harvest. Difficulty level: easy — suitable for all experience levels.
Pick pods when they reach 6–8" in length and still feel firm and smooth — the beans inside should just be starting to form but not bulging. Regular harvesting every 2–3 days encourages the plant to keep producing. Left too long on the vine, pods become fibrous and the plant slows production. The flat, Romano-style pods are exceptionally versatile in the kitchen: steam or blanch them lightly to preserve their golden colour and sweet, buttery taste, or sauté them in olive oil with garlic for a simple side dish. They hold their shape well in stews and pasta dishes and are excellent for pickling. Fresh pods will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days; they also freeze well after blanching, making it easy to enjoy the harvest well into the colder months.
A productive, easy-to-grow climber with genuine kitchen appeal — Gold Marie earns its place in any vegetable garden where vertical space is well used.
