Cascadia Snap Pea seeds produce one of the most reliable and sweet-podded snap peas available to home gardeners. This compact, semi-leafless variety bears plump, crisp, stringless pods that are as satisfying straight off the vine as they are in the kitchen. Pods reach 3 inches in length, filled with tender, sugary peas that have a clean, bright sweetness and satisfying snap when broken. The semi-leafless habit — where tendrils replace many of the leaves — means plants are naturally more upright, better air circulation, and easier to harvest.
Cascadia snap peas mature in approximately 58 to 65 days from direct sowing and thrive in cool weather, making them ideal for early spring or autumn planting. Sow seeds directly into the garden 4 to 6 weeks before your last expected frost — snap peas tolerate light frost and actually prefer cool soil. For a second harvest, sow again in late summer, 8 to 10 weeks before the first autumn frost.
Choose a site with full sun, though plants will tolerate light afternoon shade in warmer climates. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and space plants 2 to 3 inches apart in rows spaced 18 inches apart. While Cascadia's semi-leafless tendrils allow plants to support one another to some degree, a simple trellis, fence, or mesh netting at 24 to 30 inches tall will improve yield and keep pods clean and accessible. Plants typically reach 30 to 36 inches in height. Work compost into soil before planting; peas fix their own nitrogen, so heavy fertilising is not necessary. Well-drained, moderately fertile soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0 is ideal.
Harvest pods when they are plump and bright green but before the peas inside cause the pod to bulge or yellow — at this stage the sugars are at their peak and the pod retains its characteristic snap. Check plants every one to two days once pods begin to fill; regular picking actively encourages further production. Pods left too long on the vine become starchy and tough.
Cascadia snap peas are genuinely best eaten fresh, whole and raw, straight from the garden. They are equally at home tossed into salads, lightly stir-fried, steamed, or added to pasta dishes in the final minutes of cooking. Their sweetness holds well with simple preparations — minimal heat, minimal seasoning. For short-term storage, refrigerate unwashed pods in a breathable bag for up to five days. For longer keeping, blanch and freeze.
Cascadia is a straightforward, high-performing variety that rewards beginners and experienced gardeners alike with generous harvests of genuinely sweet, stringless pods across a long cool-season window.
